New Members are Invited to Join the Tucson New Horizons Band & Strings for the Fall 2026 Season

The Tucson New Horizons Band & Strings will kick off its fall 2026 season with rehearsals starting on Sunday, September 13th for the bands and Saturday, September 12th for strings.

New members are welcome!

Band ensemble rehearsals will be held on Sunday afternoons at Catalina High School (3645 E Pima St, Tucson, AZ 85716 | Map)

String ensemble rehearsals will be held on Saturdays at the UA School of Music (1017 N Olive Rd, Tucson, 85721 | Map). More info on the strings ensembles is now available at https://stringproject.music.arizona.edu/new-horizons-strings/.

The Tucson New Horizons Band & Strings is open to adults near or over the age of 50 and meets weekly on Sundays during a Fall and Spring seasons. So, whether you have always wanted to play an instrument but have never had the chance, or you used to play and havenโ€™t played in a long time, we would love to have you join us and have a good time. All you will need is your instrument and a positive attitude!

If you are interested in participating, plan on attending the information meeting. It will be followed by an instrument “petting zoo” for instrument sampling.

If you’re interested in getting involved, come to a meeting for new people at 2:00 pm before the band concert. There will also be a “petting zoo” where people can sample various music instruments.

Summer 2026 Rehearsals Start June 7th

Both the band and strings groups will have a summer session. Please see below for details.

Intermediate Band: First rehearsal Sunday June 7th, 1:00-2:15 pm. Meets every Sunday (except July 5th) until August 16th. Concert on August 23rd, time TBD.

Advanced Band: First rehearsal Sunday June 7th, 2:30-3:45 pm. Meets every Sunday (except July 5th) until August 16th. Concert on August 23rd, time TBD.

Tuition: Cost of participation is $50 for the summer session. Participants who have not already paid their participation fee when they picked up music can pay with a check or online with credit card HERE.

We have two levels for the summer session designed for those who were in Beginning Strings this year and the Intermediate / Advanced Strings, ability descriptions below.

Intermediate / Advanced Strings: Fluency in reading musical notation, ability to play scales in multiple common keys on the instruments across all 4 strings, familiar with a variety of simple bow strokes and rhythms. Shifting not required.

Beginning Strings: Able to read music notation at a novice level, confidence in basic instrument fundamentals, ability to play a 1-octave D major scale, comfortably play both Arco and pizzicato.

Schedule: First rehearsal Sunday June 7th, 1:00-2:15 pm

  • Beginning Strings: Room 162 with Liliana Peterson
  • Intermediate / Advanced Strings: Room 170 with Justino Perรฉz and Ana Dominguez

Meets every Sunday until August 9th, concert at 2pm.

Tuition: Cost of participation is $80 for the summer session. Participants can pay with a check or online with credit card at uazm.us/sp.

Registration: You will complete a paper registration form on the first day of the session. If you will miss this session, but intend to join, please let us know.

The Tucson New Horizons Band & Strings invites you to attend our Spring 2025 concert!

Please join us on Sunday, May 4th for our Spring 2025 concert. As with all our concerts, admission is free of charge and will feature an exciting variety of musical pieces. The concert will include performances by Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Bands as well as our new Beginning and Advance Strings ensembles. This spring, the Advanced Band is part of a consortium of 22 ensembles from across Pima County, including high school and community bands that will perform Sonoran Rivers: A Celebration of Desert Water. This is a new work by local composer Yuanyuan Kay He and poet Alison Hawthorne Deming, inspired by local watershed data. (Visit https://air.arizona.edu/watershedsoundscape for more info.)

Spring 2025 Rehearsals Start January 26th

The TNHB&S we will start our spring 2025 rehearsals on Sunday, January 26th. Following the fall reschedule, the different groups will meet at the following times:

  • Beginning Band: 1:00 – 2:15 pm (Rm. 232)
  • Intermediate Band: 2:30 – 2:45 pm (Rm. 232)
  • Advanced Band: 4:00 – 5:30 pm (Rm. 232)
  • Beginning Strings: 1:00 – 2:30 pm (Rm. 170)
  • Intermediate Strings: 2:30 – 4:00 pm (Rm. 170)

Current members should keep an eye out for an email from Matt or Barbara with details and other pertinent info. If you didn’t play with us this past fall, please send an email to info@tucsonnewhorizons.org to let us know you’re planning to join us for the spring. This will allow for a head count to provide enough music to be printed for all who need it.

For people wishing to join one of our ensemble groups, but do not have recent playing experience, we ask that you wait unit our fall session to join. Send us an email at info@tucsonnewhorizons.org to let us know of your interest so you can be contacted when we get closer to the fall start-up time.

The Tucson New Horizons Band & Strings will kick off its Fall 2024 season with rehearsals starting on Sunday, September 8th. Rehearsals will take place at the Fred Fox School of Music on the University of Arizona campus.

The new fall session will see the addition of string instruments as well as the upgrade in our name. So, if you’ve been waiting for a chance to learn violin, or maybe cello, in a fun and supportive environment, then we’ve got the best option for you.
